The most important consideration when choosing a desk for your home office is the size of your working space. Minimizing the efficiency of available space is the key to working effectively. You will need approximately 3.5 to 4 feet behind your desk, between you desk and credenza and 3 feet in front of the desk if you are going to put guest seating there. You need room at lease 9x12 for example to comfortably put a 36 x 72 desk, two side chairs and a credenza.
Office Desk Surfaces
Most commercial duty desks have laminate surfaces. These surfaces come in a variety of finishes and serve most uses very well. Wood edge trim is an economical way of dressing up a laminate desk. Veneer surfaces are more elegant and tend to cost more. They are more susceptible to damage from rough usage, however.
